the different aspects self, independent construal of self, and interdependent construal of self are my favorite things I’ve learned in this course thus far. They have over lapped into some of my papers and into my take aways and artifacts. Different aspects of self is related to many topics in my sociology for women course. For example like the second shift that women experience from workin all day in a profession and then coming home and taking care of domestic responsibilities that fall mostly of women and the struggle to balance those two aspects of self.

While intelligence does have a genetic component, I think environment is the largest factor. If a individual is in survival mode and constantly bombarded by negative things and or violence then there is no room to explore, expand, and build on things that academia considers as intelligence, intelligent traits,  or what they test for to prove intelligence. A bad environment and social problems people face will hinder intelligence. However, surviving in that kind of environment requires it’s own kind of intelligence. There are so many kinds of intelligence. Guilford suggested that intelligence is composed of more than 150 separate factors (p 196). If a person is free of conflict and nurtured in their ability to achieve greatness and learn they will meet the bar that is set before them. They will grow if they have the peace and time to read and learn and most importantly to think. New ideas and perspectives will take root if they are exposed to them. Environment is everything.

Assignment #2 Take Away

I enjoyed this assignment as it made me reflect on our cultures constant strive for perfection and achievement. More is never enough. This paper focused on our drive as a culture and society that has been known to over throw the balance of family time, family and friend connections and interpersonal relationships on every level for the sake of getting ahead. It can be a good thing but it can also be harmful to our personal lives if we do not make a conscious effort to put boundaries in place.

ENCULTURATION:

My parents values and my values still line up. I attribute this to the way I was raised entirely.

My enculturation was and continues to be defined by the norms of my culture and social group. My parents laid the groundwork of my value system and while I have been exposed to others it has not greatly changed my value system. My outlook and perspective has changed over the years but core values remain the same.
