My First Semester
I have grown so much from August until now. Things were rocky in the beginning but now I feel that I’m well prepared and adjusted for next semester. My expectations were so high at the beginning but I later realized that being a nursing major has its ups and downs. I expected things to be way easier because I was a great student in high school so how hard could a couple of prerequisites be? Oh how I was wrong, almost immediately I began to fail Chemistry exams and then studying became harder. Something I wish I knew 14 weeks ago was that there are so many resources on campus to help me get through this difficult time.
Study Habits
I studied the material given for each objective, not knowing that I would have to have better time management and actually know how to study! My study habits have changed significantly, I now have better time management skills and I am more organized with my school schedule. I learned about so many resources, we have academic and success coaching and we also have on campus therapists for students who might need mental health help or just need counseling. I’m going into spring semester with so many new study habits. I will first start by reflecting on my mistakes, seeking help, and effective note-taking.
Health Professions LLC
This semester I took many classes required for my Living Learning Community and at first I believed these classes didn’t relate to my major at all. A few weeks into the semester I started drawing many connections to nursing in my classes. For example my Sociology Professor Mr. Lopez showed us how sociology not only relates to the real world but how Nursing majors can benefit and have a broader and deeper understanding of social dynamics, cultural influences, and the intersections of many factors which impact healthcare.
My parallel plan
I decided if Nursing wasn’t for me I wanted to major in either Psychology or Public Health. Public health and psychology are both amazing professions with special opportunities.
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior and Public health focuses on promoting and protecting the health of communities and populations. Ultimately, both fields offer rewarding career paths and nursing also has my heart right now!
