I believe teachers play a fundamental role in society. Teachers have one of the hardest jobs as they are tasked with teaching the new generation and this cycle continues. As a college student, I have had many experiences with teachers and can say they have made an influential impact on my life. I believe students learn best when they have a professor/teacher that genuinely cares about the material they are teaching and the students. They also have to be able to relay the information in an effective and engaging manner. My role in the class was assisting Professor Judah as well as the graduate assistant. I helped lighten their load by reviewing and grading discussion boards, quizzes, and offering students aid when needed.
While in class, students should learn the ability to write, as this is very vital in life. Many people have ideas but if you are not able to articulate them, then it is no use. Students in PSYC 424 had the ability to relate concepts they learned in class to real world examples in their discussion boards. Many students would write about how something they learned in a module would correlate to a personal matter they had experienced and helped them understand it better. This is very important as well because many concepts we learn in various classes can correlate to things happening in the real world.
What I did as an undergraduate teaching assistant was give feedback whenever possible. One of I believe is fundamental to student success is the opportunity for growth. You are only able to get better when you know what you did wrong the first. Whenever I graded an assignment that was less than a perfect score, I told the student exactly why they did not receive those points. Also, there were a few times where a student would email me and it would be late at night, but I still responded as fast as I could. Sometimes, as a student, things come up and it is not within the business day so I try to be understanding of that. There are some teachers that will refuse to respond if it is not during the business day, even if the response is a simple answer.
Throughout my experience at ODU, I was able to retain information well when I utilize flashcards and quiz myself on the material. I would take the main points and write them down on flashcards and just go back periodically to study them. I focused especially on points that I struggled with. Also, as I stated earlier, when a student is able to ask a teacher something and actually receive a helpful response aids in learning. A teacher that takes the time to explain material for a student that is unsure of the material is helpful as well. I have personally had to email a couple of professors because I did not understand what they wanted in an assignment. I knew they would respond and give me useful information in order to understand what they wanted and did not simply redirect me to the syllabus. I have actually emailed professors and they never responded to my emails, which caused me to struggle with the assignments. Because I am in college right now, I was able to appreciate what the students in the class had going on and how sometimes things come up and you need extra assistance or help.
