my mid semester reflection

Study Habits

  • What classes are you doing well in, and why?

I’m doing well in sociology and I believe it is mainly due to the fact that it is extremely interesting for me and I’m typically happy to learn about sociology. In my other classes I commonly end up relating the information we are learning to the information in sociology.

  • What classes did you identify as needing assistance in?

Chemistry is the class I am struggling in most as of now. I have a harder time understanding the content and having the information stick. I study a lot for the class and exams but commonly get behind trying to understand the material from the class before.

  • What changes have you made (i.e. amount of time, location, campus resources, study strategies, etc…)?

I have changed the time of day in which I study. On days I have chem, I study for chem before my chem class. This way when we learn new information in class, the information from previous classes is fresh in my mind. I try to look over notes or study every day.

Transition to College

  • What expectations did you have coming to college?

I was expecting to have to study a lot more than I had in high school. I was also expecting that I was going to have to read a lot for all my classes. I thought I would have a lot of free time though too.

  • Have those expectations come to fruition, or not? How?

I definitely study a lot, but I don’t have to read much for classes. I didn’t have to purchase any textbooks which I really didn’t expect of me. I am still surprised with how little free time I have and how busy I am. Each day goes by fast and I get tired much quicker then I had in high school.

  • If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome?

I think sharing such a small place with someone whom I didn’t know before coming to college, definitely has its challenges at times. I also really miss my dogs at home and wish I had an animal here at school, I really love pets and it has been a difficult adjustment. I thought that managing time would be more difficult for me but I’ve been doing a great job of it.

Major

  • Name something you have learned about your intended major that you did not know at the beginning of the semester.

I honestly haven’t learned much about Speech since the beginning of the semester. In my Health class, it is primarily focused on Dental Hygiene. I’ve learned a lot about dental hygiene but that is also because I didn’t know anything about it before this semester. There was a tour I was able to go on of the child study center, and I learned that speech therapy can now be virtually which I didn’t know before.

  • Have your feelings changed about your intended major? List some thoughts you are having.

My thoughts & feelings on my major are not changing. I’m still very excited to major in speech language pathology and to hopefully be a speech pathologist.

  • Is there another subject (major or minor) that you are interested in learning more about?

I’d like to learn more about my options for a minor. I am trying to decide between special education and phycology.

Connecting to Campus

  • Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation.

When struggling to understand material, tutoring is very helpful.

  • Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you?

There have been a plethora of people who have helped me in so many ways. One group that I truly think has helped me the most is Pi Beta Phi. When I need someone to go over flashcards with me or help teach me something I missed in chemistry, one of the sisters is always there to help. They are always uplifting and helpful. There is also always someone able to give advise or point me in the right direction of someone to help me.

  • Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved?

I have attended a interest meeting for NSSLHA, I havnt fully decided if I’m going to join. I would join next semester because I decided to wait and attend meetings to ensure it was something I wanted to participate in, especially because there are dues related to the class.
