Four ethical issues that arises when storing electronic information about individuals are privacy, access, accuracy and property or piracy.
Privacy can easily be misused once is breached by a 3rd party and if the data is exposed freely on the internet, it can have tremendous negative impact in individuals and potentially reaching their organizations or place of work. For example, if a person has personal pictures or information leaked, bad hackers can use that to cause monetary impact in that person and even threats with the goal to access to that individual’s company.
Access to the information has a significant impact because we need to raise questions of who and how individual information is access, because it should only be accessible by those who need to know like doctors, employers, legal system, etc. Otherwise, that information it could be used for even discriminate Individuals. For instance, stored electronic information on race or sexual orientation and by being access for organizations or certain enterprises that can exclude certain groups from opportunities and fairness.
The accuracy when storing electronic information is also an ethical issue. Now Days, we use algorithms to predict future outcomes and if the data collected is not accurate, it can lead to negative consequences to the population or even can create worldwide conflicts.
The last ethical issue discusses here is property or piracy. Even before technology, this has been a challenge to face in society. From the paper ink to the light bulbs, there is always somebody claiming those inventions. In our modern times, this ethical issue has become more complex, especially with the advances of “Artificial intelligence.” Which is used by extracting voice, public pictures and using it by creating added content not made by the owners of that data, either for profit or damage. For example, song artist voice has been extracted to create music without their consent and misleading their fans by fake product.
