My sports diet has not changed as much as one would think over the last five years of my life. Instagram is still one of my most used social media apps, along with TikTok. However, I only really started using TikTok during the pandemic. During the isolation that took place, TikTok started gaining popularity due to its short and eye-catching videos, with it taking advantage of younger people’s short attention spans. Suddenly, TikTok overcame all other social media platforms and became one of the top social media sites in just a few years. I could not really get into Twitter mainly because it did not offer me anything different compared to the other sites I was using to get my information. With every social media platform, there is always going to be people with hurtful things to say, and while it is bad on most platforms, I feel as though the abuse on Twitter is on another level, which I do not like.

On TikTok and Instagram,, I usually follow soccer related pages that will give me information on the latest news of players I like to watch. I also follow pages that give me statistics on the different leagues of soccer around the world, because it is what I find most interesting. It also lets me see the opinions of others when it comes to players and the games they play, and give me a different perspective on how they played. Those two apps are really the only apps I have used over the years, because they give me enough information to the point that I really don’t need another social media platform. There is this app called OneFootball that I use regularly and, while it does allow commenting on their posts on sports news, I would not really consider it a social media platform, and more of like a newspaper app. The one thing I would change about the landscape of these platforms is the leniency of free speech and abuse allowed. So many soccer players are abused on a daily basis and these platforms have not done enough to punish these people, and I think that needs to change. But, I understand that it is easier said than done, since people could just get a new account easily and continue their abuse. Something that could be done is censoring certain words from the platform, but people are creative and could find a way around it, so I think it is something to think about.
