SOCCER CHARITY MATCH: THE QUEST

For my idea of presenting an organization, I would revolve it around soccer. I would also make it a charitable event, to really bring eyes to what we are supporting and hopefully raise funds to help support these causes more. The event would consist of a one-match event between two teams, with all the proceeds going to one of the charitable foundations that we partner up with. This idea has been done all over the world, and has been incredibly successful. So, why not use it to allocate funds that the club supports.

Thought Process

This idea mainly came from how many views sports teams attract with their different approaches to putting out content for their fans all over the world. They are all on most social media platforms, and that just shows the effects of how having engagement on different platforms brings more viewership to their accounts, which has a positive effect on actual viewership of their official matches. The MLS is a relatively new league compared to the top 5 leagues in Europe, so seeing how they operate their social media accounts really intrigued me. DC is no different. The club did something similar to this in 2009, 15 years ago, with two local teams playing in a match, with the funds going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Wounded Warriors Project. Hopefully, this event will be pictured as a much bigger one.

Getting the Word Out

We can spread the word about the event in numerous ways. Using the different platforms that we have talked about, like X or Instagram, we could make posts announcing the event and promoting it until the day of the event. With this being a big club and having a huge following, we could easily attract thousands of people to come to the stadium and watch. Something similar to this could be posted, with the colors matching the clubs.

We just talked about Podcasts a few classes ago, and since it’s a medium of media that is still hugely popular, we could use it to our advantage. In these podcasts, we could announce a number of different things about the event, including the teams being played, any pre-match challenges that could be played amongst select fans, any famous people who may come and watch, and so on. Celebrities and special guests sometimes participate in these challenges, so it is possible to arrange some of them to play in the games, with their participation being announced on social media. This could entice more people to come and watch. The club partnered with iHeartRadio to provide commentary of games, so this could be used during the event.

Streaming

Streaming has been on the rise these last couple of years, with Twitch, Kick, and even X, streaming tons of content, attracting millions of viewers a day. A live-stream could be set up to stream the event on these platforms, allowing people who are not able to attend, but want to watch, to support. I am not sure about X how gifting works, but Twitch and Kick allow their users to send money to the creator to support them, so something similar could be set up to where the money does not go to the club, but to the organization we’re raising funds for. Twitch and X have already partnered with different companies to stream their content, so it wouldn’t be far fetched to make it a one-match partnership. TikTok also is another platform to promote and stream the game. The club’s games are already streamed on Apple TV, so it may also be possible to stream on that platform, albeit not free.

WWE recently partnered with X to showcase their pre-show matches on the platform.

Gerard Pique’s Kings League exclusively streams their matches on Twitch.

Taking some of the things I learned from my other sports class, we would the proper staff trained to handle these type of events, and have the stadium go through its usual inspection, ADA, and regulation check ups. Hopefully, I have been able to provide you with even a glimpse of my thought process and what I am trying to explain.

Trying to Emulate

(This is what a group of YouTubers known as the Sidemen put on in 2023, selling out London Stadium. This event would be similar, although at a much smaller scale.)
