Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
When looking at majors offered by ODU, I believe that cybercrime, computer science, law, and information technology relate most to cybersecurity. Cybercrime studies illegal actions that happen virtually from anywhere in the world, how those crimes are committed, and punishments for committing these virtually crimes. This ties into cybersecurity because the tools that we use, such as firewalls and data encryption, assist in preventing such illegal activity from happening. Computer Science studies software, computer languages, and software systems. It’s basically the broader version of cybersecurity since it is a larger field and doesn’t focus on a specific section of computer systems. Computer science is closely related to cybersecurity because it protects the software and hardware of the computers by detecting malware or any other harmful products that can affect data and functionality. Law focuses on interpreting, understanding, and abiding the laws of the country. This relates to cybersecurity because these laws include the laws of the internet also known as cyber laws. These laws determine what activities online are legal, such as trolling people, or illegal, like hacking websites. Studying under a law major can provide insights to the crimes of the cybersecurity world and also teach students how to argue for or against cybercriminals when trying to win a case. Information Technology studies data and computer systems, how we use them, and how we keep them protected. This correlates with cybersecurity because individuals, or even businesses, rely on information technologists to keep their information safe, solve issues pertaining to that information, and detect any problems with the information systems. Studying in information technology is important because it provides a deeper understanding of data, which is truly beneficial since information is always around us and we rely on it daily. Although some may not look the part, all of these majors relate to cybersecurity and are a crucial part of it.
