Leadership Roles In College

Another experience that I have had that has built my character is when I received my positions in ROTC. When I became a squad leader in my sophomore year of college I did fail instantly. I was in charge of leading OC’s (officer candidates that were already in the military as enlisted) and other midshipmen. I didn’t know how to lead people that were already in the military, were fully disciplined, and knew every time that I messed up. Quickly I realized that I am an extension of my command and I have to put out information even when communication is always an issue. I learned how to resolve these issues and tell them when they had watch, mandatory events, motivating and etc. which might not even be on my schedule. It taught me how to be proactive and led to me to become an ability group leader. This position was a bit easier but I because this ability group leader while I was a squad leader. I loved the responsibility that these positions gave me which is why I ran for standards board chairman and at the same time I am now the academics officer. For academics I need to make sure that every member has their degree completion plans completed and correct, getting their mandatory study hours for the week at the calc or physics labs, and showing up for other required study times. I am currently doing all of this while taking 19 credits and being standards for the fraternity making sure that there are no issues and if anything comes up then I also have a standards board that I have to convene with if there is any measures that we should take. The determination and leadership that I have shown makes me 100% confident in my ability to be a great officer in the future when I commission.
