Donald Sterling was the former on the NBA franchise, the Los Angeles Clippers, from 1979 to 2014. He was the one who moved the team to Los Angeles from San Diego. During this time, the Clippers weren’t able to be a notable franchise in the NBA, but Donald Sterling would lend a hand with keeping them financially stable. The reason that Sterling is the owner of the Clippers is because of a recording that was released in 2014. In the you can hear Sterling making racist remarks towards black people and even former NBA star Magic Johnson. This started because he didn’t like that his mistress took a photo with the former player, and how it can be taken that she enjoys being around black people. Sterling also describes the team he owns as a plantation. Once the record was obtained, the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, released a statement stating that Sterling was banned from the NBA.
Members of the Clippers decided to form a protest by wearing their warm-up shirts inside out so that the Clippers Logo was not visible. Other teams, such as the Miami Heat, followed this protest to show that they stand with the players. Of course, many were shocked by the remarks that were made, and all media outlets covered this story, including playing parts of the recording. Former President Barack Obama weighed in on the situation “Ignorant people want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk.”(Obama, 2014). The media viewed the players’ protest as admirable and applauded the team for continuing to play. Them continuing to playing was seen as a protest in itself, indicating that they will not let the situation ruin the hard work they put into the season. On social media teams, everyone was able to voice their opinions and how schocked how someone having such a mindset. As well as commending the players and their protest. The players’ protest was simple yet powerful at the same time. The players are willing to continue playing for the team, but don’t want to wear the logo or the team’s name because they feel disrespected. This protest wasn’t only for them, of course, but for those who feel affected by Sterling’s comments.
