Journal Entry: Privacy Rights- Data Breaches

While looking into the privacy rights website I noticed while it doesn’t go into detail on the specific breaches that have occurred, it does have a running total of the known breaches in the US. The number alone was enough to make me pause in complete shock.

In the past I have held positions that were fraud-based and even was working for a large company when a breach occurred within so even with that base knowledge, I was incredibly surprised. I believe researchers could benefit from the information provided on this site for multiple reasons.

The first benefit I can see for researchers collecting information on data breaches is to attempt to anticipate where a breach is most likely to occur. By being able to anticipate possible target zones I believe researchers could create better protective software to ensure that this does not happen.

Another benefit I could see to this information privacy rights offers would be to see the types of companies that are targeted the most, whether they are successful or not. If researchers can see who is constantly under attack and do not get affected, they can take information from this company to help prepare other safeguards for less protected companies and future potential targets.
