Weekly Blog – Cultural

Blog 10

Even from the start of this course until now, my future has been shaped very well because of this course. In my other course (PSYC 304), the blogs are similar so this will echo that post with the exception of relation of material to cultural instances rather than social. It has helped me tremendously in the things I listed in Blog 1. I have tested multiple hypothesis’ with individuals and groups. Healthy debates in order to garner information for this course have happened which has produced results in blogs and modules. I do believe I have a good understanding of the motives on why we do things from this course. Being myself has led me to learning a lot from this course.

The top three things I have learned so far are:  Life Values (Blog 2), Expression (Blog 8), and Openness (Blog 3). The Life Values blog taught me the most because I had to dig deep within myself to express myself and relate it to the course. The Expression blog got me to analyze the how America and Japan are similar and differ in this instance assess situations. The Openness blog assured me that being open to different cultures is natural and being close minded is taught.

People from different cultures express themselves according to the environment. In Japan, being more expressive is normal because there are so many flashy things to grab one’s attention. In America, the behavior is similar but not to the extent of Japan. In African culture, dance is a way of expression that can be used as a form of conversation. They are similar to what I would believe because of my prior experiences first hand with these cultures. The concept of universality can certainly be applied because feelings such as happiness, sadness, and even regret can be observed with basic knowledge of having the ability to assess situations.

Fairy tales absolutely have an effect on cultural norms and values. I can name any Disney animated movie that comes to mind and explain how scenes, themes, plots, anything has shaped society and culture norms today. For example, in the movie Cars, Lightning McQueen teaches resilience and perseverance. Obviously cars cannot talk so the fairy tale brought to life human elements that we use today for kids to give them a platform to learn those two terms. This is true because this movie and character combo taught me this at a young age.

Me personally, I feel as if competence is the most important here. In any line of work, you are expected to learn, know, and carry out. If you cannot do so, you are replaced. If you are not competent at work, school, in a relationship, there will be consequences. All of this to say that, people should get their act together if there is a hint of incompetence form someone that has authority over the status of your service.

I am great.

I am empathetic/sympathetic.

I am a hard worker.

I am goofy.

I am fun.

I am caring.

I am trustworthy.

I am awkward.

I am engaging.

I am dynamic.

Which statements do I think are associated with independent construal of self? I would say all of them because I feel this way but the ones that people do not tell me and are more self-proclaimed are 5, 9, and 10.  Interdependent are subsequently 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8.

Independence is happiness.

Interdependence is more of a societal norm.

I was happy with this score as well! Although it was not as high as my Social Psychology score, I am pleased with an 86. These grades let me know that my study habits are successful and I will not waiver.

This is an excerpt of my notes as my professor clarified me to do.

    • Socialization starts from the first day of life
      • Characteristics a child is born with determines how its caregivers react and interact with it
    • Children of different cultures are born with different biological predispositions to learn certain cultural practices
What are the first characteristics?

How are the different from culture to culture?

Openness relates to me simply because I believe in being transparent. In situations, you want the other person you are communicating with to know you have nothing else to say and nothing to hide to establish trust. One time, my manager thought I knew something about a certain table walking out of their bill but I did not. I told him everything that I saw but I did not know anything pertaining to this incident. He trusted me and moved along with interrogating a different coworker. Conscientiousness relates to me having a consistent personality becauseI always believe in doing what is right morally, ethically, and sensibly. An example of this would be when I let my manager know who was stealing tips even though the thief was my friend. Agreeableness because I always feel as I am a pleasure to be around. My friends, coworkers, even people I do not know always assure me of this. Extraversion and Neuroticism go hand in hand for me because I am now an extrovert due to me being a server at a restaurant. I wasn’t always outgoing, I used to be really tense around people and would not speak. Being a server and around people all the time has changed me for the better. I believe my personality is consistent because I have had friends that I have not seen in years come up to me after I say something, crack a joke, make a comment, etc. and they would be like “same old William”, quite frankly, that brings me joy.

A couple life values that are important to my career pursuit are integrity and ambition. The ambition part, without that, there would be no school for me, no job, no reason to continue with school after high school. The integrity part, I have always believed that being truthful will get you farther rather than fabricating to make yourself look good. I decided to continue higher education because I feel that my life is destined for greatness. In order for me to obtain greatness, I need a degree, to network, and then to get my foot in the door of my dream job. Right now, I am working on the degree part, and networking. My parents (mostly), teachers, peers, and caregivers instilled these values in me so I could have this mentality to get it and earn it and not expecting it to be handed to me.

I believe this class based on the course objectives in the syllabus will help me a number of ways in the future. I believe in having a free mind and spirit at all times. In order to do that, testing hypothesis about behavior of individuals and groups will be able to do that. With having a free mind and spirit often comes debate. In order for a healthy debate to occur, the origins of such must be known and in this class, we will have knowledge of that. The way we do things, why would we do them, how we can expect others to feel about the way we do them will all be intricate parts of this course that I am eager to learn about. In order for me to have success and this course, I will simply be myself. I find the way that I learned things that are of my interest (such as this class) I have great success when I ask questions, relate material to real life scenarios, and feeding off of other people’s opinions on the material we learned in this class.
