Discussion Board: Ethical Considerations of CRISPR Gene Editing

on

Some possible ethical considerations of CRISPR Gene Editing are uncertainty about the risks associated with it, inequality, misuse, and accessibility issues. It is possible for CRISPR Gene Editing to have adverse outcomes such as mutations which could lead to new health problems or diseases. Mistakes could happen and long term effects of CRISPR Gene Editing is not fully understood yet. If only a portion of people use CRISPR Gene Editing, but other people do not, it could cause an unintentional divide between “edited” and “unedited” people; Which in turn could cause inequality. People would probably use CRISPR Gene Editing to select desired traits (which may be more valued), and that could lead to discrimination against unedited people. Furthermore, if CRISPR Gene Editing was to become available for universal use, would everyone be able to access and afford it? I don’t think so. Not even everyone in this day and age can afford the current healthcare services that are available. In my opinion, CRISPR Gene Editing should not be used since the safety aspect of it is not fully understood. The potential side effects are not completely clear, and I wouldn’t want people to end up facing detrimental consequences.
