Course Reflection

1. Please answer the following questions and support your answers with pictures, written work or anything that may persuade your instructor that your work meets the objectives of this course. The course objectives are as follows:

  • You should be able to expand, in conversation and in written form, on the basic concepts learned in introductory French.
  • You should be able to talk about yourself and your preferences, needs, and interests in simple French.
  • You should be able to identify and incorporate the grammar and vocabulary presented in the textbook in oral and written form.
  • You should be able to discuss some cultural topics in French, presented in the text and in assignments concerning the francophone world.

Outcome

What did you learn from this course besides grammar and vocabulary? Did you start viewing things from a different perspective? Use specific examples.

At the start of the course, knowing the professor, I knew that French culture would be a big proponent on the course. It was wonderful to learn about the holidays and the way the French-speaking countries celebrated them. I also didn’t know how many French-speaking countries there were. When we played Jeopardy, it was one of the questions and I was astonished by the answer. Another holiday I learned more about was Bastille Day. In a way, it can be described as their version of America’s Fourth of July. Bastille Day is July 14th and it celebrates the day the Bastille was stormed.

Experience

What are your personal experiences outside the course activities/assignments that relate to what you have learned in this course? How do they meaningfully connect in some way to the knowledge or skill set you gained from this course? Use specific examples.

Scouting for locations results in having to converse with people from different backgrounds. I used the limited vocabulary I have in French to help get the locations for some of the films I helped work on. Other times, the French classes encouraged me to talk to others who i heard spoke French. It’s such a great feeling to see things learned from school help with real world encounters.

Transfer

Can you apply information or skills you have learned through the course work to a situation outside of this course, such as your relationships with others? What would it be and why? Use specific examples.

I have some friends who have gone to French-speaking countries and have asked me to help them get around in certain situations. They would ask me how to ask for directions and I would tell them how to say simple things like “Je voudrais…” when ordering at a restaurant or “s’il vous plait” when thanking someone.
