For this journal entry, we were asked, “Can you spot three fake websites and compare the three fake websites to three real websites, plus showcase what makes the fake website fake?”
Some of the ways I have identified fake websites were online shopping. The fake websites sell items that we know that are highly valued for an extremely low price. Just the other day, My mother and sister came to visit my house. My mother was about to buy a Dell touch screen laptop that had 128 Mbps for $33.84. My sister asked me to take a look at it and see if the price was actually reasonable. I immediately told my mother not to purchase that laptop because the laptop was too cheap. Even when I was looking through the website, the grammar was terrible. I could barely read through the content. Then I asked my mother to copy and paste the website link to a blank text message. Once I saw the website link, it looked like they were replacing the letters with a number. For example: They used the number 3 as a capital E and used the number zero as the letter o. I told my mother that the website is fake.
Another way to find out if a website is fake is how many ads that constantly pops up. If the website has too many pop ads, get off of that website. All it takes is for you to accidentally click on one of their ads, then they will start sending you a ton of scam emails. The biggest fake website I have seen by far is the amazon pallet boxes. These ads are all over social media. They have big time content creators promoting the fake website. Once you click on the ad, they make it seem like you have to order the pallet immediately. Any website that has a timer on the top of it and tells you who is buying them, is fake.
I have attached two websites that claim they are amazon. If you look at the bstock website, the pictures are blurry. The amazon logo looks like it was copied and pasted onto the website. This website does not look appealing. Now, if you look at the actual amazon website, it looks professionally done. The pictures are clear. It gives you a customer service tab. It does not give you too much of a description of the product in the title. When you pay attention to the small details, you will second guess the fake website.
