Creating a More Sustainable Workplace:
During week 8 of the course MPH 784: Creating Sustainable Environmental Futures, I completed an individual assignment that involved applying course content and concepts to a graduate-level paper and an oral presentation. The purpose of this assignment was to meet the SLO 5 learning objective in the GEH 3 track competency, which is to recommend approaches for preventing and addressing environmental health hazards. The assignment’s focus was food, diet, and sustainability, and I was required to develop detailed recommendations for making a workplace more sustainable. I selected the organization I’ve been employed with as the workplace. Genetics and IVF Institute is an organization that offers a diverse range of fertility services to individuals and couples seeking to start a family or in need of medical treatment. As an employee, I have observed that our current practices are not environmentally friendly. Therefore, I made a few recommendations to assist. I recommended the addition of recycling services and only purchasing snacks that generate recyclable food waste. In addition, I suggested the promotion of recycling through ads and providing plant-based, sustainable meals during our monthly lunches. I firmly believe that the recommendations can help our organization become more sustainable and promote public health.
Service- Learning Project:
During the fall semester of 2022, the MPH 776 Global Health course included a service learning project that aimed to provide students with real-world experience in applying their skills and knowledge in the community. I had the opportunity to work with an organization serving the community and participate in their daily activities. This project allowed me to gain firsthand experience of how community interventions can aid in achieving global health. Through the service-learning project, I gained insights that I wouldn’t have necessarily gained in the classroom. I volunteered at a Salvation Army store and learned all the many services they offer the community.Expanding service learning to include community-based research can offer valuable insights. Service learning and research are essential in addressing challenges and enhancing global health.
