Military Sealift Command Virtual Tech Library Digitalization
Summary:
The project examines a case from the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC) as part of broader efforts to modernize legacy engineering artifacts and transition toward digital engineering practices, including the development of digital twins (DT). MSC maintains extensive maintenance and repair records for its vessels within a virtual technical library (VTL). A crucial step in creating accurate DT models is the digitalization of VTL’s legacy documents and the extraction of information embedded in their artifacts, which include relevant details, such as instructions about tolerances, connection types, and materials. However, existing OCR tools perform poorly on MSC documents due to their low quality, outdated fonts, and noisy background. To address these limitations, we proposed novel deep learning-based OCR solutions designed to significantly improve text recognition accuracy for MSC’s legacy engineering artifacts.
