Exploring Culture

LingroLearning provides students with the opportunity to learn about how people in Spanish-speaking countries live through the Exploración Cultural activities. They consist of a section of general information about Spanish speaking countries and provide examples of life in that country.

These sections are important because they give students the opportunity to compare the similarities and differences of another culture with their own life. It also gives the opportunity to compare the differences between Spanish speaking countries, which is important because there are many unique countries with their own unique cultures and traditions.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in your local community is important for personal development, as well as the development of communal ties. I like to teach Spanish to my daughter, and she likes to practice what she has learned with her Latinx classmates at school and that helps create a cultural connection between them. I’m also a Girl Scout troop leader and enjoy teaching the scouts Spanish vocabulary as part of Hispanic Heritage Month and as a way to encourage bilingualism. As a mother I believe it’s important to pass on knowledge, like languages, to the younger generation and cultivate a love for other cultures early in life.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad gave me the opportunity to have a spontaneous conversation with a native Spanish speaker. It was a wonderful experience, I enjoyed my conversations with Adriana very much. I learned how to think of other words and ways to say what I mean when I forget the Spanish word I need. For example, I forgot the word for summer, so I said “cuando hace calor” and my meaning was understood.

Presentational Speaking

For our first project I made a video about my family. It was nice to learn to talk about things I cared about and the video was a great way to prepare short bits of sentences that were easier to remember.

Presentational Writing

For a presentational project, I chose to do an informational flyer about ADHD. This was another project that was great for personalization. It allowed me to learn about vocabulary that was important for me to know in order to communicate effectively about the things I care about.
