Exploring Culture
In this class there was a lot of products and practices that helped me gain understanding of cultural perspectives . One product that helped was duo lingo. Which is an interactive Spanish learning websites that goes over, vocabulary, speech, sentences, and much more. A practice that helped me also is TalkAbroad which is a website where you can talk to native speakers. These two things helped me realized that everyone is different.
The two products stated above helped me create a better understanding of the values and cultures because they give background knowledge of the different cultures. It challenge my world view by giving me different perspectives of the cultures. At first I believed that everyone from a Spanish speaking country spoke the same and had the same values. But that is not true each have they own values.
Engaging in Communities
Engaging in your immediate community is very important. They are an important source of social connection and a sense of belonging. I went to the language learning center and learned so much from talking to them and others.
Reflect on your experience and participation in these communities. Include artifacts such as photos, audio/video clips, etc.
Interpersonal Communication
TalkAbroad is a site where students can go and have conversations with natives from a Spanish speaking country. In this class I also have one on one conversations with the professor where I was able to show that I was capable of having a conversation while speaking in a different language. Finally we were also able to participate with each other in class on an application called flip grid. This allowed us to record oursleves and comment to each other in Spanish. https://app.talkabroad.com/students/homepage
When having the talk abroad I was very nervous at first. I was worried that the person I was speaking with would not understand but they did . I be came comfortable because the person was understanding which helped me excel. Another problem I struggled with was being able to make sentences putting the right action verbs in the correct places. To overcome that I went to the language center and was able to ask questions to figure out how to create sentences. Something that I excelled in was being able to understand what was being said in audio assignments in the duo lingo work. Something that I would do differently is be open to asking questions and go to different sites to help get a better understanding of the material.
Presentational Speaking
In this class I presented to my peers on flip grid. Flip grid is an application where you can record yourself and present to your fellow classmates. Our presentations consisted of conversations from the teachers where we answered.
When presenting the presentations I was struggling with understanding of what the professor was saying. In order to overcome this challenge I slowed done her presentation and deeply listened to the words. Something that I was good at was being able to speak my answers out in the presentation. Something that I would do differently is practice my answers before starting the video. I was so quick to remember answers that I was moving too fast and made me mess up.https://flip.com/groups/14192155/topics/35250808/responses/413405785/comments
Presentational Writing
Inside this classroom something that we wrote were discussion board post. Within the post we have to answer questions in Spanish. Another thing we had to read was wellnesss flyers on lingo learning . example of post:
- Which is the sport that people practice the most in Spanish, according to the video?
Answer this question in Spanish, and also let us know, in English, what sports you like to practice, you have practiced, or you would like to practice.
In this assignment I had problems with formulating sentences. To overcome this I went back to the duo lingo and payed attention to how they used conjugates within there sentences. What I did well in was being able to understand what was being said within the sentences. Something that I would do differently would be to use the vocabulary sheets that where giving during the lingolearning.
Interpretive Listening
For these activities we had to listen to audio assigiments that we had to analyze. One was a video where we had to listen to their favorite sports in Spanish. Another one was listening to a lingolearning audio to see if something was true or false.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HKfV9u6ehE
How have you grown with each activity? Something that was unclear for me was understanding they used in the audio. To over come this I had to go back and look over the vocabulary sheets that and sound the words out to see if they are alike. My takeaway experience was to pay attention to the wording because not all of the Spanish speaking countries sound the same. With this experience it has helped me listen carefully to the wording.
Interpretive Reading
In this activity we had to read short descriptions of Spanish speaking countries. These activities where on duo lingo. In this short descriptions they where of people and their countries.
How have you grown with each assignment? With reading I had trouble reading the vocabulary. I overcame this by looking up the word a listening to the audio of the word. What I found most interesting was that the way you see the words is not the way you say them. What I took away from this activity was that in order to understand you have to go back a read slow.
