SPAN 101

Introduction

My name is Jonathan Osberg and this is my spanish portfolio, it is for my degree/class requirements. This will contain reflections from my work this semester cover culture, engagement, speaking, writing, listening, and reading.

Exploring Culture

In the section below is pice from a project were I wrote my weekly schedule in spanish. I use it to analyze the week of Latin Americans. The lives of those in Latin America are both similar and different. Similar in daily routine for those in cities and different in remote areas where more work is require.

Engaging in Communities

I don’t have any personal experience engaging in spanish speaking communities , but in a world of increasing connectivity, knowing more than one language will be a must.

Interpersonal Communication

This semester I interviewed my classmates in spanish.

It is difficult to think in a different language and it is evident from this video. As I memorize question and responses it becomes easier to understand what is spoken to me.

Presentational Speaking

In this example I talk about some places I frequent in my week.

The biggest challenge I had it this project was remembering what I wanted to say and editing it together. I found writing what I wanted to say before recording helped me alot.

Interpretive Listening

Over the semester I completed several many homework assignments that included audio clips in spanish which had to be interpreted. I found these hard to do because I was new to the words and the playback speed could not be changed. Sections with few new words were easier but still took a lot of time to complete.

Interpretive Reading

Over the semester I completed several many homework assignments that included text in several situations in spanish which had to be interpreted. These were not as hard to complete because I could take my time to interpret and understand what was being put out. Looking at notes at the same time as reading helped a lot. Reading is the skill that is growing the fastest for me.
