SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

The products and practices that helped me gain understanding of cultural perspectives is the Adventuras textbook and the Supersite. It had cultural information on different Spanish speaking countries and it talked about in a way that was engaging to read about.

For example, I learned about how people in different Spanish-speaking countries greet each other – with kisses on the cheeks. It’s something that seems odd to me as an American, but it is also interesting to learn about different cultures and how they interact with each other. It also talked about the families and how they are changing and staying the same.

Engaging my immediate and global communities has a lot of value and importance. Learning about new things with other people is a good way to expand one’s knowledge

Most of my interpersonal audio and oral recordings were done through services such as Supersite. The aforementioned activity included  talking back and forth with another person.

For example, I had read some sentences I read for a Zoom recording, and I also had talked back and forth with another student. I have grown with each assignment, growing more capability and confidence with my speaking abilities. Something that was difficult for me was speaking smoothly and such. I overcame it by trying harder to get everything out without awkward pause. I suppose I excel more at speaking without the pressure of communication baring down. I learned to try my best and I will do better next time.

For this class, I had recorded a recording with Zoom about my family. I talked about members of my family, albeit with different names and pictures attached.

I suppose the part that challenged me the most was in doing the recording was speaking clearly and understandably. Since I sometimes have trouble speaking even in English, it goes doubly so for any forgein language I attempt to speak. Nevertheless, I believe I excel at creating the sentences themselves, I will have to try harder at speaking better.

In terms of presentational communication, I have completed some other writings  in my Spanish class in which I wrote down stuff, like some sentences I wrote, and the sentence I wrote about what a family in a picture was doing.

Those assignments have helped me grow and improve my Spanish abilities. The first one mentioned helped me to become better at creating my own sentences and such, while the other one helped me become better at that too as well as connecting the words to their meaning and drawing conclusions about them. The difficulties I faced while writing this were overcome by going over the material and rereading it. I can do better next time by going over the information even more.

Interpretive listening activities I completed this semester are one in my textbook and the related activities. These activities involve listening to people say numbers, talk about their family members, and much more.

Some of the activities amounted to listening to a string of numbers being said, while others involved answering true or false questions about something a person speaking was saying. Others involved listening to something and answering other types of questions about it. It was challenging understanding all of what they were saying. I can not say what I found most interesting and compelling. My take away from the listening activities is that it was interesting to learn about that much stuff.

Some interpretive communication activities I have read this semester are the cultural sections in the textbook. They were very insightful and interesting.

These readings were about cultural related subjects such as how people in different Spanish cultures greet each other, or about families in modern Spanish speaking countries. Some part were confusing due to the fact that I was less familiar with the words from my beforehand miscellaneous Spanish knowledge, but I overcame it by studying the words. My takeaway was the different cultures are interesting and insightful to learn about.
