A way that I now engage with sports, whether it is talking to other people about it or getting real time updates and news, is through social media. What I like to use is this super helpful app called Real (not a sponsor lol). They show real time updates on every single game you choose, plus player stats, and people can comment whatever they want under each update. So for example, if I am not home to watch TV and I am curious about how the Clippers game is going, I can check the app and instantly see what happened and what people are saying about it. It makes following sports feel way more connected, even when I am not physically watching.

Another way I track sports is through X or Twitter. I follow a bunch of pages related to teams, players, and organizations I am a fan of. My timeline basically turns into a live sports bar during big games. It is chaotic, but in a fun way. You get everyone’s reactions, jokes, arguments, breaking news, all in one place. It makes the whole experience feel bigger. As far as people communicating through sports, like mentioned in the first lecture of module 2, appointment television becomes such a powerful way to reach an audience. Big events like the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, or the World Cup turn into massive opportunities to advertise, send a message, or bring attention to something. Companies know this and are willing to pay millions for a thirty second Super Bowl ad because they know everyone is watching. Sports basically become a really big cultural moment, and not just a game.
