In sports, success goes beyond skill and hard work; it’s about connections. That’s why I was excited to take on the Sport Professional Penpal assignment. I knew it would be a great opportunity to connect with someone in the industry and learn from their experience. After doing some research, I reached out to Crystal Thompson, a Digital Content Manager for the Dallas Wings of the WNBA.

I found Crystal’s LinkedIn profile and was immediately drawn to her background in sports communication. With a degree in Sports Marketing from the University of Texas and over five years of experience in digital content creation, she seemed like the perfect person to help guide me. Her role with the Dallas Wings involves managing social media strategies and creating engaging content, while working closely with athletes to build their personal brands.

To reach out, I sent a thoughtful message introducing myself and explaining my interest in sports communication. I told her how much I admired her work with the WNBA and mentioned my excitement about this assignment. I was thrilled when she agreed to be my penpal and shared how she wished she had a mentor early in her career.

Crystal’s journey in sports is inspiring. After graduating from UT, she started as a social media intern for the San Antonio Spurs. Her creativity and storytelling abilities quickly led her to a full time role, and she later joined the Dallas Wings. Now, she’s instrumental in growing the team’s online presence and connecting with fans through engaging content. Crystal has helped raise the visibility of women’s basketball, which is something I’m passionate about as well.

What stands out to me most about Crystal is her dedication to staying authentic in her work and building real connections with both athletes and fans. She explained that her success isn’t just about strategy or creativity; it’s about trust and relationships, whether online or in person.

I’m excited to continue learning from Crystal this semester. I’ve learned the value of taking initiative and the importance of building professional relationships. I’m grateful for her mentorship and can’t wait to apply her insights to my own career path.
