Taking this course truly helped me engage and understand a lot more about the human body and its immune system. One thing that I learned, which stood out to me the most during my time in this class was learning about the structure and functions of the B-cell receptor and T-cell receptor. I found it fascinating learning about the components of a BCR and how it contains both heavy and light chains. Unlike B cells, T cells can’t just recognize antigens on their own, they need costimulatory molecules such as CD8 and CD4 which would recognize either MHC I or MHC II. Learning about these different receptors helped me comprehend how important our immune system is in recognizing and fighting off foreign beings in our body. It also helped me realize how having a good and stable immune system is impertinent to one’s health; without an immune system, we would constantly get sick and become more susceptible to a plethora of infections and diseases.
