A successful business doesn’t come without its own set of problems especially concerning the employees. When the unpredictability of human nature is a factor in business it’s hard to prepare measures that mitigate the damage they can do. Before the internet or overall cyberspace white collar crimes were easier to disguise and get away with because the methods of storing and looking over data was a cumbersome process. The internet completely changed this process making it easier to spot trends, track deviant employees, and overall mitigate the potential damage that could have been committed. With the improved security the method of attack has become exponentially more sophisticated, the ability to do something such as storing thousands of customers’ data in the palm of your hand would be unprecedented before the internet.

For example credit card scams and identity fraud are commonplace because of our new technology. Some employees use hand held skimmers to steal customer data on the spot which can be sold online or used by the original person to make purchases. Another example is someone setting up an evil twin or a fake wireless access point for devices to connect to to steal their information. While the technology can be weaponized by the employees there are many ways that they can become the targets of these attacks as well. An example in this situation would be phishing attacks and spam. Phishing has the potential to be the greatest threat to a company because one click can give an attacker inside access with that user’s credentials. Companies spend millions of dollars yearly on training for things like what proper company emails look like, how links should look, filter settings, etc. While new technology has created opportunities for new attacks it has also created new ways of defense for businesses, employees, and customers.
