I had the chance to interview Dr. Sita Canady. Dr. Canady is a pediatrician who works at Fall Hill Pediatrics in Fredericksburg, VA. Her journey to her career started off with her attending and obtaining her undergraduate degree from Notre Dame Preparatory School. Upon graduating from there, she then attended UVA to get her medical degree in pediatrics. Once she had her undergraduate and medical degrees, she then got an internship, then decided to go University of Iowa to do her residency. While Dr. Canady was doing her residency and she was awarded with many awards, one that is very fond of her is the Sarah Riesz Award; which was awarded due to her compassion, effective management, and communication skills to families during times of stress.
Dr. Canady’s love for science is what really drew her to the field. She was always interested in how the body worked, and she loved working with people. She stated in order to get a deeper dive into understanding how science and people work hand and hand she chose the medical field. Dr. Canady stated that one of her favorite factors of the job is getting to work with and see babies. She loves babies, especially when they coo, or make little noises. She said her favorite stage of seeing a baby is when they come in for six month checkups, as they aren’t old enough to be scared of her yet. With that being her most favorite part of the job, the most challenging aspect is unexpected patient loss Dr. Canady said. She stated that when something of that nature happens, the office makes it their top priority to be there and give love, and support for grieving families.
The biggest thing I took away from this interview was to stay eager and to not let anything bring you down. One of Dr. Canady’s biggest piece of advice was that it is a very long road, but it’s very worthwhile at the end, so to have lots of perseverance, and to have a love for what you’re doing. I also took away to really never take for granted but to cherish the fact that I’ll get the opportunity to work in the healthcare field, and be able to help others.
