Essay #1
How did high school prepare you for college?
While in high school, I did not take my courses too seriously until I was fully involved into my education at first. Until my mother told me to get into the International Baccalaureate program. After graduating high school, I can finally say that I believe this program helped to prepare me for college. The program not only transformed my view of life but also the goals I have set have been elevated. It prepared me for college because of the rigorous coursework, the amazing teachers that cared for their students’ success, and also high school prepared me for college by helping me to manage my time.
Throughout my middle school career, I did not have to study for any subject. I would just understand everything that was being taught to me. Once I got out of middle school and got into the IB program in high school, I realized in eleventh grade that not studying was not going to work for me anymore. The coursework in the beef of the IB program, which is the last two years of high school, were the two hardest years of my life. In order to not fail, I had to do work and stay up until one to two in the mourning. This completely changed my dynamic on my school life. I had to put more of my time into my education if I actually wanted to succeed in life. The coursework in the IB program was so difficult I had to stay back for tutoring sessions, and this was new to me because I had never needed help up until this point. This is when I realized that if I thought this was hard then I will not last in college. Granted, the IB program is specifically designed to get you ready for college by putting you into college like environments at a younger age. This difficulty in the work that the teachers gave me helped me realize that I cannot play around when I get into college.
The teachers I had in high school were very good at their jobs. Some of them were not the best but most of them actually cared for our success in the class. They believed that we could do great things in the IB program and they were right. I graduated with the IB certification of completion and also the advanced diploma. One of the only reasons I did okay in the IB program was because I had some great teachers. I believe that having good teachers is a big difference maker when it comes to learning new material. A good teacher can change the lives of the student, not only educationally but also mentally. Some teachers can talk to some kids and help them through difficult situations in their lives. High school also helps students to better manage their time.
Being in the IB program turned out to be a great thing that happened to me because I learned that I needed to manage the time I spend on pleasure and on school. Each course in IB was difficult so it also required learning the material on my own free time. This helped me understand the value of keeping up with my assignments. I decided that playing video games and going out with my friends was not worth failing simple assignments that add up to a lot at the end of the year. I decided that I can have fun and pass my classes at the same time. So I made a schedule for myself so that I can be on top of all of my assignments and tests before they were due.
To conclude, high school has helped to prepare me for the extensive workload that college professors can give to their students. High school prepared me by giving me rigorous coursework and material to learn, having great teachers that helped me learn hard to comprehend lessons and also by helping learn how to better manage my time.
