What do students learn from research projects?
There are many benefits to conducting a research project or a research essay. I believe instructors assign research projects in order to help the students strengthen their knowledge on research skills. Students can learn a lot from research projects because they require the student to look something up and quote people, and citations are also a big topic in the research world. Some things students learn from research projects are how to form in-text citations, it could also give the students an area of interest if they would rather conduct research for a living or not, and another benefit could be the experience attained from it.
In-text citations help students because they cannot only agree with a certain topic, but they can also have their own stance on it and strengthen it with outside source materials. An in-text citation is a reference that includes the author’s name and the page number of where the material was gathered from. In-text citations are usually found after a sentence that is slightly reworded by the writer of the article or paper in order to keep the integrity of the writer. Without in-text citations, a lot of people would have been shunned for plagiarizing. Plagiarizing is when someone uses another person’s work and does not give credit to that person or put where they got that information from. Also, the honor code system is set up in a way where somebody can be an amazing writer and cite everything, but if they literally miss one in-text citation, they could potentially get kicked out of school. Some of the punishments are just too harsh and need to be reviewed if the case of plagiarism was simply forgetting one citation or one writer’s name. This is a good thing because it gives the students experience and helps them to learn to always double check their work.
Another good thing about research is the fact that it could help the students determine what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Some people have jobs that only require them to conduct research on certain topics, such as the medical field. Many people in the medical field are required to know how to perform research so if a patient has a weird disease that our country has never seen before, maybe another country has and able to treat that disease and got their treatment of that disease published online. Research could also help to strengthen one’s abilities to understand if someone’s research is trustworthy or not. Some people just cannot stand doing research which is fine, but others love doing research because it helps them attain more knowledge and knowledge is one of the most powerful things on the planet. Another benefit could be the experience attained from conducting research. Experience is literally how somebody can be qualified for certain jobs. So, somebody who is more experienced in conducting research could be a great asset for a company or firm that needs more people to conduct research on how to save money for instance.
To conclude, students have the power to learn a lot from the research they conduct. Research helps students to learn new things about writing, helps students to figure out what they want to do in the future, and helps students gain experience.
