Blog #6: Woman in Advertisements and Insecurity

This TED talk further enforced things that I have looked upon my own and discussed with my friends. I often comment on the silly ways advertisements try to get consumers to buy products and one of my favorite things to do is to point out flaws in their logic or wording when describing their product. The most entertaining being TV Ads. The least fun add are the ones that sexualize women to sell a product.  When I see them, I tend to ask my boyfriend if they work in him and” Is this how men’s brains work?” to my delight he shakes his head and comments on how dumb it is. I like to do this to help remind me of the goal of the ad is to sell a product and to not take it so personally because like jean Kilbourne mentioned my self-esteem plummeted when I hit middle school and I started comparing myself to my peers and “teens” in my favorite tv shows and movies. I read the magazines; I was convinced it was real. It was only when the campaigns to stop photoshopping models started to get popular when I was in high school that I realized I was being fed lies. even in recent years I have been fooled by the models on Instagram and have to actively remind myself they hit certain angles and touch up certain photos to appear perfect.

This photo was chosen to illustrate that even in newer media platforms women chose to distort their bodies to fit an unattainable ideal. The Instagram vs. reality campaign seeks to highlight the extra effort that is put into influencer photos in an attempt to show that what is seen on influencer profiles is only the best angles of them and their bodies are not perfect or more attractive than the average person.
