Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
Old Dominion University (ODU) has a lot of different classes to choose from. I have gone from Computer Engineering to Computer Engineering and Science and am now in Cyber Security. Cyber Security is one of the few courses offered at ODU that meets all of my goals from the Computer Engineering and Science departments, as well as the IT and Modeling and Simulation departments. This is because students can choose which courses to take from a list. This is very different from other departments, where each student has to take a set of courses that aren’t very different from each other.
When these people take part in an interdisciplinary curriculum, they are able to see where there might be risks between different parts of design. With a single-discipline-focused curriculum, people need to get help from others to learn about the parts of design they don’t know. This leaves room for mistakes and differences between people, whether because of language barriers or different writing styles. A person with a background in more than one field can connect these two, allowing them to check each other’s work and acting as a “jack of all trades” in the group. This is very important for Cyber Security students who want to work as a Systems Engineer or an Administrator. When an Engineer or Admin is in charge of a network, they see a lot of different problems and tools to fix them. Students learn how information moves through a network and how it is served by mixing courses in computer engineering networking and IT server administration. With the addition of Computer Science and Modeling and Simulation, students can look at how the tools they may learn to use in IT and ECE interact with the network and how to change their function to better serve them. They can also change the visuals that these tools serve with Modeling and Simulation.
