Sample Activities

I created these activities because I would have personally enjoyed them when I was learning a different language. I believe that ESL teachers should also look back and reflect on when they were learning a second language to best aid their students in their ESL journey. These activities are interactive and fun, which are aspects that are very important to me. I do not want my students to be bored doing an activity, as I need all of them to be learning and attentive. To reflect on some of my experiences, I remember several activities that bored me. I do not remember what I was learning for any of those activities. They have to be memorable as well, so the students can go back and think about them when they are stuck somewhere in their English.

These activities not only involve the students, but involve the teacher as well. As good as it is for students to have free will over activities, it is also good for teachers to be active participants in these activities. It helps us learn where students are struggling and how we can correct that, while also having the students get comfortable with our presence. It is almost like they are immersing themselves within the language, rather than just immersing themselves when they are only in the classroom. It is important to interact with both the teacher and one’s peers, to get the most out of the language learning experience.
