Cybersecurity Risks

One of the key trends in identity management is the adoption of biometrics to secure accounts. In the IBM article it discussed how the US lags behind other geographical locations such as APAC and Europe when it comes to the use of biometrics as an authentication method. On a cultural level the mentioned places outside of the US have a increased interest in these types of technologies. The use of biometrics is essentially the creation of a template or profile of someone’s physical characteristics to authenticate them based on how their features match. A perfect example of this is when an iPhone user unlocks their phone Face ID can be used to authenticate them vs entering a passcode. Other options out there include fingerprints, retina scanning, voice recognition, and several more. Another trend is multi factor authentication where a password and pin/passcode are used to grant access to an account. Younger generations are more apt to use this form of authentication as well as utilizing password managers which generate and store passwords. Password managers are a convenient way to never have to remember the never-ending passwords for all the accounts that are used today. FIDO is a risk mitigation service that provides companies the protocol to protect their user’s privacy. The authentication protocols that FIDO Alliance uses assists with securing accounts for multiple organizations and allows them to switch from passwords with other login options that are more secure.  Several big name organizations have used them to convert over to two factor authentication and biometric methods for security of themselves and users.
