Students & Media

The Blue Line Project was inspired by engaging educational efforts in other cities, most recently Oahu, Hawaii sponsored by the Blue Planet Foundation. To localize our event and engage student creativity and entrepreneurship, ODU’s Blue Line Project integrated a university course, Geography 422W/522 Coastal Geography for fall semester 2019. Six undergraduates and one graduate student volunteered to tackle the project and increase and apply knowledge of coastal geomorphology, sea level rise, estuaries and coastal management. In addition, ODU graphic design student Marc Scacchi provided a service in designing the project logo. Whether you are visiting the Blue Line in October or just discovering this project later, make a note that the project’s student engagement was a critical factor to implementation and learning along the way.

Media coverage of the 2019 project was amazing helpful to spreading the word and informing the public. In addition to media highlights on this page, a story by Virginia Sea Grant was one of their top viewed sites of the year. Read about it here: Turning the Tides of Public Opinion: Norfolk residents get a glimpse of future tidal flooding. (Credit: Virginia Sea Grant.)
