Reflection #1
Introduction
Completing my first 50 hours of internship at ManyTek international has been a great experience in my internship journey. I was able to learn a lot of things in these 50 hours by applying my academic knowledge into real world experiences. My role as an SOC analyst intern is to investigate the alerts, learn how to use Defender tools and collaborate with my teammates while documenting the steps to prepare a report. This experience has taught me the importance of details and facts.
What I Have Done So Far
Since the start of the internship, I have learned various things that have helped me understand the cybersecurity profession better. As an intern, I’m responsible for preparing at least one report on investigation of the threat/malware alert per week. I also work with my teammates to help each other out in our learning process. Throughout these 50 hours I have gained a lot more confidence in giving presentations and using the Tools such as MS Defender, MS Sentinel, IRIS, various OSINT Tools and wazuh.
I took part in Teamwork activities where we all worked on an assignment together to find the problem and solve it. Teamwork is very important in Cybersecurity. Being able to communicate the issues with your team and discuss the events is one of the responsibilities of the SOC Analyst. It gave me an opportunity to witness how SOC Activities happen in real world.
What I Have Learned
Being to use the actual Cybersecurity tools that are used in the professional workplace was very different experience from learning in Academic Coursework. When you are in the workplace you cannot rely on what if, facts are what matters. Every single detail is very important while working on the investigation.
Documentation is an important skill to have in Cybersecurity. I have improved knowledge and skills on tools such as MS word which is great for reporting and documenting and MS excel for organizing and keeping track of things while following the specific instructions from the supervisor on how to do things. My communication skills have improved significantly since the beginning of the internship. I am a lot more comfortable asking questions and reaching out to ask for help, especially working in teams.
Challenges
One of the challenges I faced during my first 50 hours of internship is being overwhelmed by the information. When you are working on an investigation you must collect information’s from various tools and put it together in order to understand the cause of the alert. To be able to see the bigger picture of what happened you must go through many steps and details while keeping track of things you saw/learned. It felt very confusing and complicated for me for few days, however now I’m able to process things with clear mind and not letting the information overflow overwhelm me. Being unfamiliar with tools also made it difficult to navigate through them in the beginning. As I gained more practice and hands on training, I became more comfortable with the tools and information.
Future Goals
I hope to learn more about the different types of cyberattack alerts and how we can investigate them to keep the organization and people safe. I also want to learn more about the steps we can take if the investigation of the threat alerts results in true positive confirming malicious behavior.
By the end of my internship, I want to be able to understand the cybersecurity tools at a deeper level and improve my technical skills. Being able to work independently is also one of my goals by the end.
Conclusion
Overall, the first 50 hours of my internship were great. Being able to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world environment has been very fascinating and fun. I look forward to completing my internship and being ready for my career field by the end.
