Introduction

After completing my 100 hours of internship at ManyTek International, I have learned a lot about the Security Operation Center and the responsibility of a SOC Analyst. This experience has been very valuable in my academic journey to strengthen my skills and knowledge. I have become way more confident that I was on the first half of the internship in terms of my duty and responsibility as a SOC analyst intern. I have become more comfortable than before with defender tools such as MS Sentinel and MS defender.

Experiences During the 100 Hours

In this second half of my internship, I worked with my team to investigate the historical hacks that have happened before and documented everything we found to prepare a report. One of the first important skill that Analyst need is knowing what tools to use and how to use it. As I have been practicing with tools and gaining more experience, I am able to identify what tools can be used for what kind of investigations and alerts.

Working in team has taught me to keep an open mind and learn to analyze and approach the problem with different techniques. Sharing the information, we found through our research with each other has helped me become a better communicator and comfortable asking for help and questions in case of confusion.

Documentation is essential part of being a SOC analyst as I have been working on more alerts and reports every week, my ability to pay attention to details and prepare a well-organized report has improved a lot. It is important to be able to communicate the technical details of the alert/incident in a clear manner as an analyst because fellow analysts and clients should be able to understand it.

What I Learned

These 100 hours have helped me learn about the different types of alerts and how different ways are used to investigate them. I learned to deep dive into the alerts and investigate them based on facts and not assumptions. I also learned the difference between False positive and true positive, while some alerts may not be the actual threat, it is still very important to investigate every alert that is triggered, collect the evidence and make the conclusion based on that.

When I started the internship, I wasn’t confident in how to navigate different cybersecurity tools and connect the evidence together to get a better understanding of the situations however after 100 hours of practice I am able to navigate the tools very comfortably by myself and collect and connect the evidence from different tools to get a better understanding of the alert or incident. I have also learned how important it is to work together as a team, ask questions/help and have a discussion with your teammates and share information’s to defend the system.

Challenges and Growth

One of the challenges I faced during this period is remembering the different techniques that are used for different types of alerts. Theres various types of threats that require various techniques to deal with them, which was challenging but I overcame that challenge through hours of practicing.

Balancing the investigations, reports, school and work was challenging, however, learning to manage my time has resulted in a positive manner. As I’m gaining more experience and confidence, I can finish the alerts and report in a timely manner while also making time for other things.

Future Goals

My future goal is to keep learning and improving myself. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of cybersecurity and cybersecurity tools. I want to be able to work and understand the advanced security alerts independently. By the end of the program, I want to be more skilled, more confident and improve my problem-solving skills along with learning more technical words.

Conclusion

Overall, it has been a great experience so far. I’m really looking forward to learning about more advanced techniques and threats. I am way more confident in my skills and knowledge than I was when I started the internship. I hope to strengthen my abilities more through Hands-on practices. Due to this internship, I can confirm cybersecurity is what I want to pursue my career in. It has not only been a great learning experience but also fun. I look forward to grow my experience and knowledge.
