Philosophy
Hello! My name is Dorene Huff. I have lived in Hampton, Virginia, for over 60 years. Throughout my life, I have believed that hard work, dedication, persistent learning, and giving back to the community are gifts I can share.
My views are rooted in values and ethics, and equity of access, freedom, and confidence are the foundation of a healthy society. A library is not just about books; it’s an important hub that needs to remain open to all people. I value upholding ethical standards because they ensure the community has access to the information and resources that foster a better environment. I believe curiosity can help the mind, and I also believe freedom should be protected.
My academic journey at Old Dominion University, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Leadership, has shaped my understanding of inclusive and organized cultures. Beyond my professional and academic life, I am committed to my community I worked with Serve the City and volunteering to tutor children in reading, math and English at Newsome Bailey within the Hampton and Newport News area. My experiences have taught me to adapt to diverse learning styles and meet the needs of all learners across different age groups.
As a library professional, I will draw on operational leadership, understand community advocacy, and provide educational support for my team. Whether I am helping a patron navigate the digital resources, helping the community program and ensuring that every visitor feels respected and supported. My goal is to foster an inclusive space where everyone can grow, explore, and thrive.
