Researchers can use public data gathered by Data Breaches to prevent not only future attacks but to also use this same information to develop safeguards and training to teach others how to not fall for obvious traps. This would greatly benefit the public as this training would in theory teach those who have an interest in keeping themselves safe how to be safe online and how to avoid data breaches.
