I learned from assignment #1 that I am not as accepting of other cultures as I thought I was. I was not aware that to be completely accepting of a culture, one will become part of it. When doing this assignment I also didn’t realize that there were levels to acceptance. I knew that there were racist people, hippies, accepting people, and people of that culture. I mention the term “hippies” because they are those people who accept everyone but deep down they are sort of racist. After reading each level I found out that I am between “Acceptance of Difference” and “Adaptation of Difference”. I am accepting of all cultures and actually prefer other cultures over the american culture. This assignment was personally relevant to me because I grew up in different households. I have two little sisters who are puerto rican and one little sister who is half-black. I enjoy the hispanic and black cultures a lot. I feel that I belong most to those cultures because I grew up in them. I cook hispanic foods, listen to reggae music, and know some spanish. I also listen to old school R&B and rap primarily. I feel most comfortable in diverse communities, I don’t like being in predominantly white environments.
I chose this image because it shows my three sisters, mom, and me from this past summer.
