Assignment Takeaway #4

I did not learn much from assignment number four because I have done similar assignments in other classes prior to this one. Although, this assignment reminded me that men and women are still subject to objectification in advertisements. Their bodies are used to sell products no matter how demeaning they may be. Advertising women as objects specifically, creates this false image of who women truly are. We are expected to be perfect and proper, but also sexy and always ready to please men in any way they desire. Young girls are taught that they are to use their beauty, and not their brains, to obtain success. Men are also objectified in advertisements. They are portrayed as being strong and stable. This creates the unattainable expectation that men don’t feel emotions and must handle everything to make sure the world doesn’t descend into chaos. Advertising creates false expectations for both genders.

I included this image because it shows that sometimes men and women are hypocritical when it comes to objectification. These women objectified that delivery man while hoping he doesn’t objectify them.

I chose a second image because it perfectly shows a common issue when it comes to gender roles. Some women only want to fight against gender roles that do not benefit them. In this scenario, she still wants him to pay the bill because traditionally that is what men would do. Aside from that, she doesn’t want to be put in a role, which is unfair and hypocritical.
