Graduate, undergraduate and recent graduates are eligible for this paid opportunity with the city of Richmond.  Where they will be  required to immerse themselves in the process of public service make significant contributions toward the completion of an important task or project. Interns will work under the direction of a designated city leader performing specific and general job duties that prepare them to successfully enter the workforce upon graduation.  Interns earn $9.90 per hour and are eligible for benefits of temporary employees (holidays, pro-rated sick leave, civil leave, funeral leave and military leave).

The Program

The Mayor’s Fellows Program provides participants with an extended opportunity to link theory and practice.  The experience has been designed to help participants integrate the knowledge and experiences they have gained in their studies.  Participants will be expected to immerse themselves in the process of public service and to make significant contributions toward the completion of an important task or project, one that is meaningful to them and to the division in which they are working.  This “real world” setting will allow them to develop and to hone their leadership and professional capabilities.  The Internship will provide participants with an opportunity to think critically about their own actions and those of others so that they might become reflective practitioners.

Departments will host interns for the upcoming 2020 summer semester (May 26, 2020 – July 24, 2020):

The Commitment

Interns will be committed to a nine-week assignment (May 26, 2020 – July 24, 2020) which will include:

  • Semester-Long Project(s) – Department projects aligned with the intern’s 1-2 established Learning Objectives.
  • Seminars – Participation in professional development seminars.
  • Reflective Journal Assignment – Participants will reflect upon their internship experience through one-page journal assignments.
  • Final Paper – Participants will submit a final paper at the conclusion of their internship experience. The paper will be one page in length.
  • Remuneration – Paid internships of $11.00 per hour.

In addition, City of Richmond interns will be engaged, educated, and connected to established and emerging leaders. This will enable them to develop practical skills while learning more about the City of Richmond as a whole.

The Process

The Program Requirements

Eligible candidates for the Internship must:

  •   Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student, a graduate student, or a recent graduate of an undergraduate degree
         program from a four-year institution in good academic standing (within the last 6 months).
  •   At least sixty (60) credit hours or Junior Status from an accredited four-year institution and obtained at least a 3.0 grade

   point average.

  •   U.S. citizenship or legal non-citizen residence status.
  • Complete an online application through the City’s online NeoGov database system. Application must include resume

and cover letter indicating which department(s) he/she would most like to work in, along with their college transcript.
