Summer internships in Washington DC can be a fabulous experience. And they can be critical to success. At the alumni panel we held on Tuesday more than one of the participants said that when they are hiring they place a lot of weight on experience gained through internships. There are various ways to pursue internships in DC. There are some big organized internship placement services that some students take advantage of. Alternately, reach out to me for tips about how to pursue your own internship placement. I have some contacts on Capitol Hill, and I can also offer advice about how to apply for internships on your own.

In Congress most member offices are now recruiting interns for Summer 2022. How can you find those internships? Look on the websites for the members. Most have an application to complete there. For instance, here is the link for the internship application for Congressman Donald McEachin who represents the 4th Congressional District in Virginia: Internships | Congressman A. Donald McEachin (house.gov). McEachin’s chief of staff is an ODU alum who graduated with the BS in Political Science degree in 2011.

Most agencies, organizations, and Congressional offices have similar internship opportunities and application instructions posted on their websites. Scroll through back postings on this blog to find information on more of them. Or simply look up the website for organizations you admire and find their internship recruiting page.

If you are awarded an internship, keep in mind that you can always contact me (come to BAL 7028 or e-mail me at jrichman@odu.edu) and complete the internship coordination form to register for internship credit at ODU.

As I mentioned above, another way to pursue an internship in DC is to work with one of the internship coordination organizations: below is information about one of them that was just sent to me. Of course if you worked with them and got GMU credit, you would then have to transfer the credits to ODU.
