Course: CYSE 201S – Cybersecurity and the Social Sciences
Cybercrime continues to grow, yet many victims choose not to report these incidents. One reason is embarrassment. Individuals may feel ashamed for being tricked by scams such as phishing emails or fraudulent messages. Many victims worry others will judge them for making a mistake, so they remain silent.
Another reason is the belief that reporting will not help. Victims may think law enforcement cannot trace online criminals or recover stolen funds. Since many cybercriminals operate anonymously or from other countries, some people assume nothing can be done. This discourages reporting and allows cybercrime to continue unnoticed.
Improving public awareness and simplifying the reporting process could help increase the number of victims who come forward. Reporting cybercrime is important because it helps authorities track trends, warn others, and prevent future attacks.
