It’s That Season: How to Properly Ask for Recommendations

It’s officially ‘Secure the Bag’ season. Spring and summer is finally approaching and so are the numerous internships & scholarships that comes along with it. I know you might be thinking, “well how can I ask for a recommendation if my teachers barely know me”… don’t worry I’ll give you the proper tips.

  1. You want to make sure that you have a good report in your class. Ex: coming to class on time, interacting during lecture, submitting work on time, and doing well on test and assignments. (Even if you never physically hold a conversation with your professor, these little actions will remind them who you are, even if they don’t know your name).
  2. Do Not.. I repeat… do not wait until the last minute to ask for a recommendation, you want to make sure you ask no later than a MONTH in advance. (This will ensure that you receive the most genuine recommendation, and also gives the Professor/ individual time to create one, because they also have a life as well).
  3. DO NOT put all your eggs in one basket. Make sure that you ask for recommendations from multiple sources, just in case one of your options fall through).
  4. Before submitting any official application make sure that your resume is reviewed by your campus career center.
  5. Lastly make sure that you are descriptive and polite in your ‘recommendation request email’. This includes using proper formatting and greetings and making sure that you thank them for their time. Also if it is a professor make sure you state what class your in and your UIN.

Now, that I have given you the proper tips to secure the bag. I’m going to drop some websites below where you find these internships and scholarships opportunists.
