Here are some tips to help you navigate college.
- Don’t Force Yourself into a Major: It’s perfectly okay to not know what major you want, especially if this is your first year in college. Statistics say that college students don’t declare their major until they’ve changed their major at least three times. However, you should try to start in the field of study that you can imagine yourself in the future.
- Use Rate My Professors: When you’re registering for your classes, use this resource. Students will tell you how they feel about taking courses with a certain professor. There’s insight on whether or not a professor is a tough grader, or the likelihood of there being pop quizzes, extra credit, lots of homework, and many papers.
- Avoid 8am Classes: Unless you’re truly dedicated to waking up early, don’t sign-up for 8am classes. Some of us find ourselves sleeping through our alarms after a long night at work, social life, or trying to make an 11:59pm deadline the night before.
- Attend Every Class: It might not be mandatory, but it’s a good idea to attend every class. Some professors give extra credit for showing up when most students don’t. There might even be last minute exam reviews or changes in due dates or assignment instructions.
- Connect with Your Professors: Participate in class discussions and use your professors’ office hours. Make it a goal to have your professors know you by name! They can help you excel in class and be a future reference for your jobs, scholarships, or graduate school.
