We can all partially admit to pulling an ‘allnighter” at least once in our lifetime; whether it be for school, work, or personal pleasure, we have somehow found ourselves wide awake at 4 am. College has a notorious reputation of students pulling allnighters in the library. Sometimes doing this can give us a rush and a burst of energy, but then later we find ourselves burnt-out and exhausted. You then make a personal promise to yourself to never pull an allnighter again…. and three days later you’re pulling another one.
I am for one guilty of thinking that my quality of work is somewhat enhanced if I do it last minute. I have found this theory to be true, but I do not make a habit of constantly pulling allnighters. This type of behavior leads to poor grades and a lack of retention in regards to your course work. More importantly, pulling allnighters is potentially bad for your health and sleep. Sleep deprivation increases your stress hormone levels, can lead to a lack of concentration, and even weaken your immune system making you more prone to catching a cold. One of the many side effects of constantly pulling allnighters is that it may cause you to gain weight, because your body will begin to crave sweets and junk food. When studying we tend to snack and not even realize that we are full.
Overall, we can agree that there are more negative results that come from staying up all night, rather than getting rest. There are effective ways to properly study without cramming and losing a ton of sleep. Proper preparation such as time management, and organization will save you from many late nights of typing papers, projects and homework assignments.
