Interested in Going Greek? How to Decide…

A majority of recruitments start next month and going Greek is not an impulsive decision you want to make! Below are some ways to determine if Greek life is really for you:

  1. Be aware of your purpose… or find it! What is your purpose for wanting to go Greek? Some people want lifelong friendships. Some want to be more involved on campus. There are a dozen other reasons to join—just make sure it’s not to simply wear the letters or gain social status on campus.
  2. Do your research. Now that you know your purpose or passion, research the organizations on your campus. Look into each fraternity or sorority’s history. What was their reason/purpose for being founded? Do their purpose align with yours?
  3. Meet the current members. These should be people who you look forward to being around, since they will be another family and support system for you. After interacting with them in-person, can you imagine having a sisterhood or brotherhood with them?
  4. Prepare to dedicate time and effort. As a member, you will need to attend weekly meetings and actively participate in a majority (if not all) of the events by your chapter. There may be times when you will have to cancel plans with your friends to handle some chapter business, but that is why you will need to have a genuine purpose and passion for joining.
  5. Proudly rep your fraternity or sorority. A great chapter puts in the work to maintain their purpose and recruit more members to help keep the legacy alive!
