Greek Life… It’s called that for a reason. Going Greek is not something you can impulsively decide on because it requires a lot of time, dedication, sacrifices, and a bit of finances too! Below are some things to keep in mind when going through recruitment this spring:
- Semester Dues. Some Greek letter organizations expect a one-time full payment for the remainder of your undergraduate semesters, while others have semester dues. The range starts at $100 and can exceed $1,000.
- Special Fees. Aside from semester fees, there will be other expenses. Some are mandatory, but most are optional. This includes t-shirts, formal tickets, unity events, and retreats… Make sure to do your research to see if you can afford going Greek!
- Sunday Meetings. Every sorority and fraternity is different, but most have weekly meetings on Sundays. Are you prepared to give up some of your weekend? This might not be ideal for students who need the full weekend to relax and recuperate for the next week.
- Satisfactory Attendance and Participation. Just like your classes, Greek orgs expect you to be an active member. Besides coming to mandatory chapter meetings, you are expected to participate in all other events by your org. This includes community services, social events, fundraisers, and recruitment! If you weren’t booked before, you sure will be going Greek!
If there’s anything you can take from this post, it is that Greek Life requires a lot of time and money!
