Use Your Money or Lose It!

When was the last time you checked your remaining number of meal swipes, Flex Points, Monarch Plus, or laundry balance? If you don’t know how much you have, log into your ODU web portal and look for the My Dining column that is typically located on the right side of the screen. If you click + Deposit, you’ll be able to see all of your current account balances. Do you know what each account balance is for and when each expires? If you don’t, continue reading to find out!

  1. Meal Plans. Every student who lives on-campus is required to have a meal plan (while commuter students have the option to purchase one) as a way to purchase food on-campus through using their University ID card. Everyone’s meal plan differs based on their class standing and residency. To find out what meal plan you currently have, refer back to the screen with all of your listed account balances. Make sure you know how many meal swipes you have left because they expire at the end of the semester.
  2. Flex Points. These are built into all student meal plans as tax-free points to be used at select Monarch Dining locations. Unlike meal swipes, Flex Points from the fall semester won’t expire until the end of the spring semester.
  3. Laundry Plan. If you’re living on-campus, you’ll also have an account balance for using the washing and drying machines. Keep in mind that you won’t get a refund for any unused money at the end of the semester.
  4. Monarch Plus. This is a prepaid debit account that is directly placed on your University ID card for use at selected on-campus and off-campus locations. Once again, keep in mind that you won’t get a refund for any unused money at the end of the semester. Follow the link below to view the accepted locations: https://www.odu.edu/life/support/id-card/monarch-plus

A good idea is to plan out your remaining swipes and balances to make sure you will have enough and/or will use them all before they expire. Otherwise, you can try to find out where you can donate your remaining swipes and balances.
