When I was in my freshman year here at ODU, I came in as a nursing major. I learned every single thing about the nursing program here that I possibly could. Then the day came that I decided to change my major. It was devastating honestly. Being a nursing major was practically my whole college personality. I found that it was hard to come to the realization that my major was no longer working out for me. I realized that nursing wasn’t what I had wanted in life and that was a really hard decision for me to make. If you or someone you know is going through this same situation I have included some tips and tricks to help you get through it.
Tip 1: Don’t let others influence your decision. You should be able to change your major to whatever you so please without worry of what someone else thinks. You should make an informed decision by looking into the classes needed, job placement, and salary opportunities before committing fully, but also making sure that it is something you would enjoy.
Tip 2: If you are undecided about a new major or your current major just isn’t right for you, you can sign up for an appointment with a major exploration coach in the Webb center! They will assist you in finding your passions and figuring out what is best for you and your future. If you would rather not meet with someone, you can always find online quizzes and other questionnaires to help you figure out what you do and don’t like.
Tip 3: When you find a major to study, you aren’t going to be completely stuck with that one specific thing. You are going to have other opportunities that will come that you can find ways to twist your degree around to suit that opportunity. Maybe you did an activity or you were involved in an organization that wasn’t part of your major but it will give you skills necessary to do well at a job. Don’t forget that college is so much more than just your degree! It is about making friends, joining clubs, being involved, and networking!! Monarchs, get out there and chase your dreams!!!
