Internships are typically an important part of your undergraduate experience, but it’s important to know which internships to apply to and pursue. Most students will have an internship during school, and they usually happen over the summer, but some can occur during a regular semester.
When deciding the time of year to complete an internship, make sure you are mindful of how it will effect the rest of your schedule. Does the company require you to “work” 20 hours a week? Everyday? Will it be online from home, or are you able to go in person? Make sure you find the answers to these questions (to name a few) so you can make sure you’re able to dedicate the time and energy required. Another aspect to keep in mind is if you will be receiving proper course credit with the university, and if you will receive any type of compensation. This can range from potential recommendations, or a potential job opportunity, to actual monetary compensation.
One last thing to think about: will you have the resources necessary to complete the internship, and if you have to travel, how are you getting there? Also, don’t hesitate to check with the university for any financial assistance you may require to get through your internship. Just be sure to check all the boxes of what you need to get out of the experience, and then have confidence in yourself that you will be successful.
